1. Self-Awareness

Recognising your own patterns, values and needs.

Self-awareness is the ability to notice and understand your thoughts, feelings, preferences, strengths and limitations. It helps a person recognise how their responses affect decisions and relationships.

How it supports development

  • Encourages realistic self-reflection and personal responsibility.
  • Helps identify strengths and areas where support or practice may help.
  • Supports choices that are consistent with personal values and goals.
Development idea: After a meaningful experience, reflect on what you felt, what influenced your response and what you might do differently next time.

2. Empathy

Trying to understand another person's perspective.

Empathy means making an effort to understand another person's feelings, circumstances and point of view without assuming that their experience is identical to yours. It can strengthen care, respect and cooperation.

How it supports development

  • Helps people respond thoughtfully to different needs and experiences.
  • Encourages respect across differences and reduces quick judgments.
  • Supports trust, inclusion and constructive conflict resolution.
Development idea: Before responding to a disagreement, describe the situation from the other person's point of view and ask what you may not yet understand.

3. Effective Communication

Expressing ideas clearly and listening to understand.

Effective communication involves sharing information, thoughts and feelings in a way others can understand, while listening carefully to what they are saying. It includes choosing suitable words, tone and timing.

How it supports development

  • Reduces misunderstandings and makes expectations clearer.
  • Builds confidence in expressing needs, ideas and concerns.
  • Strengthens listening, feedback and collaborative problem-solving.
Development idea: Explain an idea briefly, listen without interrupting, then summarise the other person's point before replying.

  • Helps people set boundaries and address disagreements constructively.
  • Supports belonging and stronger personal and professional connections.
Development idea: Practise raising a concern respectfully by describing the situation, its impact and a constructive request.

5. Managing Emotions

Recognising feelings and choosing a considered response.

Managing emotions means noticing feelings, understanding what may have triggered them and choosing how to respond. It does not mean suppressing emotions; it means expressing them in ways that are appropriate and constructive.

How it supports development

  • Helps create space between an emotional trigger and an action.
  • Encourages calmer communication during disagreement or disappointment.
  • Supports self-control, reflection and recovery after difficult moments.
Development idea: Name the feeling, pause, consider what it is signalling and choose a response that fits the situation.

6. Coping with Stress

Responding to pressure in a healthy, practical way.

Coping with stress involves recognising sources of pressure and using suitable strategies to manage demands. This can include planning, taking breaks, seeking help, setting priorities and using supportive routines.

How it supports development

  • Helps identify pressure before it becomes overwhelming.
  • Encourages practical coping strategies and healthier routines.
  • Supports flexible responses when plans or circumstances change.
Development idea: Identify what is within your control, break a demanding task into manageable steps and decide when to ask for support.

7. Problem-Solving

Turning a challenge into manageable next steps.

Problem-solving is the ability to define a challenge, understand its contributing factors, consider possible approaches and test a workable solution. It also involves learning from results rather than giving up after one attempt.

How it supports development

  • Encourages practical and structured responses to difficulties.
  • Helps distinguish the problem from assumptions about the problem.
  • Builds persistence, resourcefulness and learning from experience.
Development idea: Describe the problem clearly, identify what you know, generate options and review what happened after trying one.

8. Decision Making

Decision making involves identifying a choice, clarifying priorities, considering alternatives and weighing likely consequences. Good decisions take context into account and can be reviewed when new information emerges.

How it supports development

  • Helps align actions with goals, values and responsibilities.
  • Encourages consideration of risks, benefits and other people affected.
  • Builds accountability by reviewing the outcome of a choice.
Development idea: Ask: β€œWhere am I now, where am I going, and where do I need to be?” Then compare the realistic options.

9. Creative Thinking

Finding fresh approaches to everyday situations.

Creative thinking helps people look beyond the first obvious answer, combine ideas and explore alternative approaches. It is useful when routines no longer work or a situation calls for flexibility.

How it supports development

  • Expands the range of solutions a person can consider.
  • Encourages curiosity, adaptability and learning through experimentation.
  • Helps people respond constructively to unfamiliar challenges.
Development idea: Think of three different ways to handle a routine challenge, then compare which is most practical and why.

10. Assertiveness

Expressing needs and boundaries with respect.

Assertiveness is the ability to communicate opinions, needs and limits clearly without being aggressive or unnecessarily passive. It allows a person to stand up for themselves while respecting the rights of others.

How it supports development

  • Helps people say yes or no thoughtfully and clearly.
  • Encourages respectful boundary-setting and self-advocacy.
  • Supports fair negotiation and more balanced relationships.
Development idea: Practise a calm statement such as β€œI understand your view; my concern is…” followed by a clear request or boundary.
